Knowing The Signs
Sometimes our bodies give us subtle hints that something’s off, and other times they practically scream at us. The tricky part is knowing which signs to take seriously. While not every ache or painful twinge means trouble – that’s the path to hypochondria - there are certain red flags you just shouldn’t brush aside. Here are 15 warning signs your body might be sending, and why you shouldn’t ignore them.
Chest Pain
Chest pain isn’t something to shrug off. Even if it feels mild, it can signal heart issues, especially if it comes with shortness of breath, nausea, or sweating. Sometimes it’s just indigestion, but it could also be your heart asking you for help.
Sudden Weight Loss
Dropping pounds without changing your diet or doing much exercise might sound good to the image-obsessed, but in actual fact it’s not good at all. Unexpected weight loss can signal thyroid problems, diabetes, digestive issues, or even cancer. If you lose more than 10 pounds without trying, see a doctor.
Severe Headaches
A random headache now and then isn’t unusual, but if you’re suddenly hit with the worst headache of your life, that’s different. It could signal something serious like a brain aneurysm or stroke. Call 911 if the pain is too bad – better safe than sorry.
Persistent Fatigue
Being tired after a long day is normal, but constant exhaustion no matter how much you rest isn’t. Chronic fatigue can point to, among other things, sleep apnea, thyroid imbalances, anemia, depression, or heart disease. That’s a long list, because it’s a big deal.
Shortness of Breath
Struggling to breathe during everyday tasks is categorically not normal. Shortness of breath can signal asthma, lung disease, heart issues, or a blood clot. If the problem persists, you should book an appointment with your doctor straight away.
Sudden Vision Changes
Blurry vision and double vision should never be a “wait and see” thing. These changes could mean something serious is happening. Even if your vision returns to normal, you should still see a doctor. Eyes are sensitive, and your body may be warning you of something bigger – including a stroke.
Unexplained Bleeding
Blood showing up where it shouldn’t - like in your urine, or when coughing - shouldn’t be ignored. Even minor bleeding from the gums or nose that keeps coming back deserves your full attention, and there are whole campaigns dedicated to get people to stop being squeamish and report blood in the poo.
Persistent Coughs
Have you ever had a coughing fit at work, and had your co-workers look worried and tell you “you should probably get that checked out”? They were right. If your cough is bringing up blood, getting worse, or keeping you awake at night, it’s time to have it checked.
Unusual Lumps
Finding a lump under your skin can be unsettling. Sometimes it’s harmless, like a cyst, but it can also be a warning sign of cancer. Luckily, awareness campaigns have paid off and most people know now to go to the doctor when they find a lump.
Persistent Fever
Fever is usually your body’s way of fighting off infection, but if it lingers for more than a few days, it’s a sign something else is happening. Don’t just keep taking Tylenol – go and see a doctor. For all you know, you could be in serious danger.
Swollen Legs or Feet
If your shoes suddenly feel tight, and your ankles or legs are swollen, pay attention. While a slight swelling now and then is normal, fluid buildup can point to circulation problems, kidney disease, or heart failure. All of these are very serious conditions.
Trouble Swallowing
Difficulty swallowing food or feeling like it’s stuck in your throat is a big, big deal. It could be a sign of acid reflux, esophageal issues, or (the consistent culprit when it comes to bodily changes) cancer. Go visit a doctor right away.
Skin Changes
Your skin can tell you a lot about your health. New moles, changes in color, or spots that bleed or don’t heal could mean skin cancer. Rashes or yellowing of the skin might signal liver problems. If your skin’s sending up red flags as big as these, don’t ignore them.
Numbness or Weakness
Sudden numbness, tingling, or weakness - especially on one side of the body - can be an early warning sign of a stroke. Even if it goes away quickly, it’s a medical emergency. Call 911 straight away – the sooner you get help, the better the outcome will be.
Dizziness or Fainting
Feeling lightheaded after standing up too fast is fairly normal, but repeated dizziness or fainting is just the opposite. It could mean that something is seriously wrong with your heart. If you pass out, call 911 straight away and go to the hospital.
