We All Want to Save Money
Over the years, I’ve found not everything at the grocery store is worth spending extra on. In fact, plenty of everyday foods taste exactly the same no matter what brand you buy. Paying extra often just means fancier packaging and clever marketing – tricks I’ve learned to avoid. If you want to stretch your food budget without sacrificing your tastiest meals, I’ve uncovered 20 foods where the cheapest version is always the smartest choice.
Milk
Store-brand milk often comes from the exact same dairy farms as the pricier cartons. The quality and safety standards are near identical, so paying extra for a fancier label doesn’t make sense. Unless you’re after a specialty type like organic or lactose-free, stick with the cheapest one on the shelf.
Potatoes
When it comes to potatoes, the cheap bag works just as well as the fancy one. Higher-priced varieties may look prettier or have fancy names and logos, but honestly, the budget ones deliver the exact same results at a fraction of the cost.
Frozen Vegetables
Frozen veggies are always picked and flash-frozen at peak ripeness, no matter the brand. That means the cheapest bag is just as nutritious as the pricier one. So pick yourself up an inexpensive bag of frozen peas or carrots – they’re healthy and convenient.
Canned Tomatoes
No need to splurge out here - cheap canned tomatoes work perfectly well. Most brands come from the same big processors anyway, so you’re really just paying for a label. Once they’re simmering in your saucepan, you’ll never taste the difference.
Pasta
Most pasta is made with the same simple ingredients: durum wheat and water. The shape and texture may vary slightly between brands, but the difference between a $1 box and a $3 one is barely noticeable once sauce (maybe one made from the aforementioned canned tomatoes) is involved.
Beans
Whether they’re dried or canned, beans are one of the most forgiving foods to buy cheap. Once they’re seasoned or cooked, it would be a discerning chef indeed who could tell the difference between a store-brand can and a name brand.
Sugar
Sugar is one of those products that’s virtually identical across brands. White granulated sugar, especially, is just sugar – there’s no taste advantage if the bag is more expensive. Don’t eat too much of it though, it’s terrible for your teeth and overall wellbeing.
Eggs
Eggs are another grocery store item where brand doesn’t matter much. A cheap pack of eggs will scramble just as well as the “fancy” versions. Unless you specifically want free-range or organic, you’re only paying more for packaging and marketing.
Salt
Salt is another thing where you’re frankly being swindled if you pay extra. Table salt, whether it’s brand-name or generic, is exactly the same. Unless you’re looking for a specialty variety like sea salt, pick up the cheapest one – your wallet will thank you and the quality of your food won’t change.
Rice
Rice is one of the most eaten foodstuffs in the entire world. There’s very, very little difference between the cheaper version and the name brand when you stop off to get some at the store. Do bear in mind that white rice isn’t actually very good for you, though! It’s stripped of fiber and vitamins and can cause blood sugar spikes.
Flour
For everyday baking, store-brand flour is just as good as the premium kind. It comes from the same type of wheat and delivers the same results in cookies, bread, or pancakes. Ask an assistant at the store which brand you should buy and they’ll likely tell you the same thing.
Peanut Butter
Unless you’re really picky about organic or natural varieties, you shouldn’t be spending too much on peanut butter. The store-brand kind tastes just as good as the name brands. If you’re on a budget and you want something tasty, always pick the least expensive peanut butter to get more bang for your buck.
Oats
Oats are a breakfast classic, and the good news is they’re nearly identical across brands, regardless of the price. Buy them cheaply and make sure to store them properly – transfer them to an airtight container and store them in a cool and dry place.
Cooking Oil
Vegetable and canola oil are neutral-tasting oils, and the cheapest version fries and bakes just as well as the pricey brands. When you buy an expensive version of the stuff, you’re really paying for the bottle first and foremost, and you don’t want that. Always go for what’s budget-friendly!
Vinegar
Plain white vinegar is one of those products where it makes zero sense to pay extra. It’s the same acetic acid solution no matter the brand. Use it in salad dressings, marinades, or even for cleaning (it’s very good for cleaning!), and you’ll never notice a difference.
Spices
Love to add rich and fabulous flavor to your cooking? Common spices like black pepper, cinnamon, and garlic powder are usually the same quality across brands. The cheap bottles do just fine for everyday cooking, especially if you go through them quickly. Save your money for fresh herbs.
Bread
The cheapest loaf usually works just as well as a name-brand one when it comes to your sandwiches and toast. Basic white or wheat bread is pretty standard across bakeries. Of course, people have their favorite brands of bread, but if it becomes necessarily to spend less money, you won’t lose out by buying the cheap versions.
Cheese
Store-brand cheese - especially cheddar, mozzarella, or American - tastes just as good as the more expensive options next to them. Since cheese is regulated for safety, the difference is often just in the packaging. And you want to skip pre-shredded cheese… you can just shred it at home.
Yogurt
Yogurt is good for you and it makes a great healthy snack. And most plain or flavored yogurts taste pretty much the same, especially when mixed with delicious toppings. The cheaper tubs have the same probiotics and nutrition as more expensive brands.
Condiments
Many people can’t eat a hot dog or burger without a little ketchup or mustard, and they spend a lot of money on condiments. But they don’t have to. Store-brand condiments taste nearly identical and cost way less. Try one out and who knows, you might even like the store-brand more than the expensive version!
